‘Griselda’ is Sofia Vergara’s Best Role Yet
Sofia Vergara steps into the role as Griselda Blanco and it’s no laughing matter.
Sofia Vergara is usually someone who brings the comedic relief to the screen, but her role as the savvy and murderous head of one of the most notorious cartels in U.S. history will definitely leave you wanting more.
‘Griselda’ is inspired by the true events of the rise of Griselda Blanco often times referred to as ‘the Godmother’. It follows Blanco’s life in Miami and her ruthless climb to the top of the city’s drug empire. Let’s just say, she was the key fixture in the distribution and trafficking of cocaine from Colombia into Miami and New York City in the 1980s. At one point, Blanco’s empire was even raking in $80 million dollars a month.
Blanco had many nicknames including the ‘Black Widow’ due to her history of killer her husbands and ex-lovers. She was eventually arrested by the Drug Enforcement Administration in 1988 and went on to serve 15 years in prison for conspiring to manufacture, import and distribute cocaine. In 1998, she pled guilty to three counts of second degree murder and was hit with another 20 years to be served consecutively. Blanco was granted a compassionate release in 2004 after suffering a heart attack two years prior. She was assassinated less than 10 years later in 2012 in Medellin, Colombia at the age of 69.
